"The ride is smoother with Labour"; A new slogan for Keir's Labour
Rightly or wrongly (or intentionally through Boris’ skilful selection of words) Keir has developed a reputation as Captain Hindsight. With his recent string of predicted policies the potential is there for it to shift to Captain Foresight.
I think Keir should grab this moment by the horns and clarify what is, in effect, his most substantial current policy: that the ride will be smoother with Labour.
Faster lockdowns, more predictability from the treasury and sensible steps on Brexit to ease the UK’s perfect storm of COVID and collapsing international relations would make for a calmer Britain.
Unfortunately for Keir (though fortunately for the rest of us) the UK will likely be in gentler waters when it comes to the next election. But at this moment, clarifying this difference with a press conference connecting his thinking, or introducing a new slogan for Labour focused on this exclusively, might shift the polls from their magically rigid 40/40 split (I prefer the latter).
A move like this would also put pressure on Boris to think carefully about what he promises and the volatility he generates in the short term. No matter what side of the fence you sit on, we would all benefit from this.
